MatriX-EPS – Heerema, Kaombo Project

About Heerema Porto Amboim

Heerema Porto Amboim (HPA), part of Heerema Marine Contractors, an offshore engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor based in Angola that undertook work on major projects for the oil, gas and energy markets, fabricating structures for subsea developments such as driven piles, suction anchor piles, spools and jumpers as well as undertaking general structural work on plates, beams, profiles and pipes.

Testimonial

"In addition to supplying and implementing MatriX-EPS, Pinnacle was also commissioned to provide us with a number of complementary services. These were consultancy to develop information management quality procedures, on-site MatriX-EPS implementation and training services, and the identification and training of a MatriX-EPS specialist to provide permanent on-site support and act as a liaison between HPA and Pinnacle.

The combination of an intensive training programme and the hiring of a MatriX-EPS application specialist meant we were able to have the system up and running within four months - a fantastic result."

How MatriX-EPS helped PAENAL expand

Background

Pinnacle Business Solutions and MatriX-EPS were instrumental in facilitating a significant expansion of the PAENAL fabrication yard in Angola. PAENAL Yard was created in 2008 to provide fabrication and integration facilities for topsides modules and FPSO (floating production, storage and offloading) vessels for the oil and gas industry. It was the first in Africa with the capacity to facilitate major floating production, storage and vessel offloading.

In 2010 PAENAL was awarded its first mega project, to provide module and associated FPSO construction and integration works for Total’s CLOV FPSO. We were commissioned not just to supply software, but also to apply our extensive industry experience and knowledge to introduce streamlined work processes to maximise yard productivity.

Right from the outset, the CLOV FPSO project presented significant challenges for the PAENAL project management team, particularly around traceability. The FPSO hull section and some of the topsides were built in South Korea, and PAENAL fabricated the water treatment module, protectors and anchor piles in Angola. DSME (Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering) in South Korea carried out the module design. DSME supplied all project materials and equipment to PAENAL, with a transportation time of two to three weeks.

It was essential to have detailed identification and tracking of all materials and components from South Korea and other sources. The ability to highlight any issues prior to shipment from South Korea and after receipt and inspection in Angola was also critical so that production efficiency could be maintained.

MatriX-EPS implementation

We implemented MatriX-EPS to provide a comprehensive material traceability quality control system. Advance information on deliveries ensured optimum fabrication and construction scheduling and avoided costly delays.

One of the key features of MatriX-EPS included the ability to optimise the use of all plate and pipe and therefore minimise waste. It was essential that on-site nesting and cutting strictly followed the predefined plan because large-diameter custom-length tubulars had been nested in advance. MatriX-EPS gave full control over this process by linking the specific lengths with the pieces to be cut and providing traceability for individual lengths from receipt to completion of cutting on an ongoing basis.

Record-breaking outcomes

When the partially constructed FPSO vessel arrived at PAENAL’s quayside for final construction, integration and commissioning, it not only represented the successful completion of an 18,520km voyage from South Korea, it also set a record by being the first FPSO to berth at an African quayside.

Testimonial

"Without a doubt, the guidance provided by Pinnacle Business Solutions was key to ensuring efficient work processes and ultimately project success for CLOV. MatriX-EPS also provided complete and detailed traceability that resulted in significant benefits to all project stakeholders including engineering, materials, fabrication and QA/QC’

MatriX-EPS was subsequently used to support fabrication of other major projects, the SBM / ENI N’Goma project that consisted of major modules and anchor piles and the CABGOC project for fabrication of 2 topside modules."

David Hutchinson, PAENAL’s QA/QC Director for the CLOV project

Smythy Consultants is a construction industry services provider, providing quality, inspection, welding and field joint coating specialist assistance during the procurement, construction, installation pre-commissioning and commissioning phases of projects.

Testimonial

"We have had a great working relationship with Pinnacle Business Solutions since 2013. We utilise and promote their MatriX-EPS PipemaX database to demonstrate best practice in the control and management of project materials during the procurement, construction, installation and commissioning phases of pipeline projects, both onshore and offshore.

The PipemaX database system has been used since 2016 on major water pipeline infrastructure projects including Amlaird and Highlees for Scottish Water / Caledonia Water Alliance. In the first quarter of 2020, PipemaX was successfully customised and deployed on a significant oil and gas subsea pipeline project, part of the TNAG development in Malaysia. This project utilised a Zap-Lok, a mechanical and non-welded connection, and was an industry first.

Pinnacle is a very competent company and one we’re very happy to be associated with. The team are excellent listeners, and they are responsive to suggestions for change. They are a pleasure to deal with."

MatriX-EPS – AWT Group Australia

About

AWT Group provides project management services for the steel fabrication and construction industry and has experience in mining, infrastructure and oil and gas.

The company uses a carefully-selected network of industry specialists with a wide range of expertise to fulfil client projects, adding value at a lower cost than if AWT Group employed such specialists directly.

Testimonial

"We were first introduced to MatriX-EPS in 2016 when we successfully recommended, installed and operated the system during the construction of a major 500-ton plant module in Thailand, and we can fully endorse it for material traceability and quality control. The suite of software is modular and can be built on as required, which allows our operations personnel to control the components needed for a specific project more easily.

For AWT Group, good project management is about being able to communicate engineering and operational developments to the client. To carry out tasks dictated by the engineering team, the operations team holds structural, mechanical, piping and E&I information that must be connected to a physical product or material identifier. Embedding MatriX-EPS within our operations means that the lifecycle of each and every piece of material can be traced by batch number, heat number, item number and description, from specification to preservation and eventual disposal. This lets us share timely and accurate data with our client and any other project stakeholders."

Wayne Ketter, International Project Director at AWT Group Australia

Also, by harnessing Pinnacle’s extensive experience gained in important mega investment projects in Asia and Europe and our extensive technical experience we have helped in improving specific functions for the piping discipline of MatriX-EPS.

Implementation

ENAP Aconcagua

Among the many experiences in the use of MatriX-EPS, we believe that the most important has been its implementation during our participation in the construction of the ENAP Aconcagua energy cogeneration plant for the National Petroleum Company of Chile; A project of great local importance for the largest petroleum derivatives producing unit, which allowed it to self-generate electricity and supply thermal energy for its refining processes. Through the use of pre-manufacturing spool modules and subsequent assembly and testing, we jointly achieve productivity, efficiency and reliability in assembly; for our direct client and the owner of the plant.

Atacama Solar Plant Project

MatriX-EPS was also used to support the manufacture and assembly of underground pipes in South America’s Atacama Solar Plant project, Chile’s first highly innovative solar-thermal plant.
